Nepal Tourism Year 2011 formally started from yesterday. On this occasion, many festivals are taking place in Nepal. Khokanā Mahotsav is one of them and is the main attraction of all. It begins from the 1st to 3rd of Māgh (January 15th-17th) and is organized by “Jyāpu Mahā Guthi.” People who are behind this Festival are putting their all efforts for the success of the Khokanā Mahotsav and making it the most memorable event in the national and international level. The main objective of this Mahotsav is to promote the Newāri culture and preserve it and make it known to people around the country. We think, this is the proper way to promote the Newāri culture and preserve them.
The festival has started from today. It was inagurated by the minister of the tourism, Sarad Singh Bhandari. Khokanā seemed to be unusually very neat and clean than other days. Local citizens are very motivated, so they are working with great enthusiasm for the success of the Mahotsav. People from all over the nation are here to witness the Mahotsav in the first day. Ghyah-Chāku Salhu (Māgha Sankrānti)
Ghyah-Chāku Salhu (Nepali: माघ संक्रान्ति [/ģĥjɔ-ʧɑkʊ. sɜlhʊ/] Nepal Bhasa: घ्यो-चाकु सल्हु) is celebrated on the first of Māgha (mid-January). In Nepal Bhāsā, Salhu typifies the first day of month, and what make the beginning of this month so special than other months every year are the festivity part as well as the marking of warmer weather – the gradual increase in the length of day and shortness in night. The day also marks the shift of the sun into Makara rāshi (Capricorn) on its astronomic path. So, it is also known as Makara Sankrānti.
The sun is believed to move apparently in the northernmost extremes leaving the southernmost extremes on this day. This is referred as Uttarāyanā, the excursion of the sun to the northward region from Dakshināyanā, southward region. Uttarāyanā is also called as Devayanā, and the Dakshināyanā’ is called Pitrāyanā. Khokana Festival: A Glimpse from 2006 (पूर्व झलक २००६)
Nepal Tourism Year 2011 commenced officially with a goal to promote domestic and international tourism in Nepal from the New Year. As a part of this celebration, Khokana is also going to host “Khokana Festival” from January 15th through 17th. We are committed to cover the highlights of the festival in this blog. Chhwô Pāŭ Kwā:
Chhwô Pāŭ Kwā: (Nepali: आलु-तामा; आलु डम [/tʃwɒ́ŋ pαυŋ kwα:/]; Nepal Bhasa: छ्वोँ पाउँ क्वा:) is a delicious soup made of beans, potatoes and other veggies served as one of the entrées in Newāh meals. It takes a lot of work to make this soup just right- a little bit tarty, spicy and thick. Making of this Kwa: has been modified over times. At present, it is widely known as Ālu-Tāmā or Ālu-Dum among Nepalese people of all background and served everyday in local inns and pubs.
Nevertheless, Ālu-Tāmā or Ālu-Dumis coined words from people of Nepali language speaking background which basically means “potatoes-bamboo shoot”. I think this term does not grasp the core meaning of Chhwô Pāŭ Kwā: as its meaning has something other than simply potato and bamboo shoot.
